When is the special election for Doug LaMalfa’s seat?
Gov. Gavin Newsom set the special election for LaMalfa’s seat for Aug. 4.
The special primary election will be held on June 2, according to the California Secretary of State’s Office.

The actual date is the June Primary, when voters will have this special election under the current lines and the primary for the full CD1 seat under the Prop 50 lines.
When @J_GallagherAD3 gets 50%+ he wins outright and there is no runoff. https://t.co/OOWEBpvJmS
However, if one candidate wins a majority of the vote (50% + 1) in the special primary election, that candidate will win the election to fill the vacancy outright, and the runoff on Aug. 4 will not be held, according to the LaMalfa primary calendar released by the Secretary of State’s Office.
Who is running to fill the remainder of LaMalfa’s term?
Two notable political figures from the North State have announced their candidacies to serve out the remainder of LaMalfa’s term in the state’s 1st Congressional District.
California Assemblymember James Gallagher, a Republican from Yuba City, has entered the race.
Chico Democrat Audrey Denney is also running in the special election.
LaMalfa’s term is set to expire in January 2027.
Denney is also running in the regular 2026 midterm election for the 1st Congressional District, which has been redrawn to favor Democrats as part of Proposition 50.
Voters approved the Newsom-backed measure in November. It was billed as a response to redistricting in Texas that favored Republicans.
The upcoming special election for LaMalfa’s seat will use the old district map that spans from Yuba County to the Oregon border and includes Chico and Redding. It favors Republicans.
