Mika McKinnon in nature.

Host Dave Schlom is joined by Canadian geophysicist and fellow science communicator Mika McKinnon to talk about their mutual passion for the Earth Sciences, especially geology!

From rocks to plate tectonics, volcanoes on Earth and Mars, it's a wide-ranging conversation with a focus on the solid crust beneath our feet and the rocks you can hold in your hand that tell magnificent stories of times of trauma, upheaval, and peaceful times in the 4.6 billion year history of our planet.

A world-class and award-winning science communicator (she was the recipient of the prestigious E.R. Ward Neale Award in 2022 from the Geological Association of Canada for her tireless work sharing the earth sciences with her fellow Canadians) who has worked as a science consultant for shows like the Stargate franchise, Star Trek: Discovery and Madame Secretary.

Dave Schlom is the longtime host and creator of Blue Dot. From surfing to Voyager in interstellar space, rock guitar to orcas in our imperiled oceans, the topics on Blue Dot are as varied as the host’s interests and connections -- which are pretty limitless! An internationally respected space history journalist, Dave is also deeply fascinated by all aspects of the grand workings of nature’s awesome machinery on scales ranging from galactic to subatomic. And topics take in all aspects of the arts and sciences.
