Blue Dot: A Range of Biodiversity: the Klamath Mountains Pt. 1

Marble Mountain Wilderness, Klamath Mountains
Michael Kauffmann
Marble Mountain Wilderness, Klamath Mountains

In the first of a special two-part series, Host Dave Schlom is joined by Michael Kauffmann, co-editor and publisher of The Klamath Mountains: A Natural History.

The mountainous region, located in northwestern California and up into southern Oregon, is one of the most biodiverse temperate mountain ranges on the planet. In part one, Dave and Michael give an overview of the region and are then joined by educator Mark Bailey, an expert on the geology of the Klamaths, to discuss their fascinating and complex geologic history.

In the second half of the show, Yurok Tribe Wildlife Department Director Tiana Williams-Claussen shares how the California Condor is being reintroduced back into their ancestral range in the Klamath Mountains.

In the next episode, Dave and Michael will examine the incredible biodiversity of the Klamath's forests and wildlife.

Dave Schlom is the longtime host and creator of Blue Dot. From surfing to Voyager in interstellar space, rock guitar to orcas in our imperiled oceans, the topics on Blue Dot are as varied as the host’s interests and connections -- which are pretty limitless! An internationally respected space history journalist, Dave is also deeply fascinated by all aspects of the grand workings of nature’s awesome machinery on scales ranging from galactic to subatomic. And topics take in all aspects of the arts and sciences.
