The late 1930s fishing boat was made famous by John Steinbeck and Edward Ricketts in their collaborative book The Log From the Sea of Cortez, which chronicled their marine biology collecting trip to the Gulf of California aboard the vessel in 1940.
John Gregg, founder and director of The Western Flyer Foundation, returns to the program after telling the story of the boat's planned restoration on Blue Dot in 2020.
Joined by the foundation's executive director, Sherry Flumerfelt, the two tell the amazing story of the boat's resurrection after repeated sinkings in a Washington state harbor. Now fully restored with state-of-the-art propulsion and an onboard lab, the Western Flyer is berthed in Moss Landing on Monterey Bay, where she embarks on educational and research voyages along the Pacific Coast.
