State summit addressing unsolved cases of missing or murdered Indigenous people first in the state
The Yurok Tribe hosted the first ever state summit tackling unsolved cases of missing or murdered indigenous people Tuesday in Arcata. State, tribal and federal law enforcement officials, as well as victim advocates and tribal representatives attended. President Joe Biden has issued an executive order calling on the federal government to do more to prioritize Native American safety.

Experts say flu season could be severe
As the weather cools, California could be headed into a dire flu season. Experts say small children who haven’t been exposed due to pandemic restrictions and masking may be most at risk. During this year’s Southern Hemisphere winter, the flu returned to some countries like Australia, where it started ramping up months earlier than usual and caused one of the worst flu seasons in recent years. It could be a preview of what’s to come in the U.S.

Proposition 26 would legalize sports betting
If passed, Proposition 26 would legalize sports betting at tribal casinos and California’s four private horse race tracks. It would also allow tribal casinos to start offering roulette and dice games. Experts say Proposition 26 could generate tens of millions of dollars for the state annually. The funding is set to go towards priorities including education and gambling regulation. Opponents say tribal casinos are trying to use the proposition to create a monopoly on gambling.
