Two recent murders this month point to a larger problem with domestic violence in Butte County.

A preliminary hearing has been delayed in the case of Curtis Morales, who is accused of killing his ex-partner in a domestic dispute earlier this month. His attorney says the extra time is needed for their own investigation.

At a second vigil for Athena Passidakis took place in her hometown of Redding on Friday. The 21-year-old was killed in a murder-suicide in Chico earlier this month.

The woman shot and killed in Chico during last week’s police chase drew dozens of family members, co-workers, and friends to mourn the loss. Also, amid ongoing cuts to federal funding nationally, Butte County’s public health department is also bracing for impact, and Woofstock is this Saturday.

Also, the Chico State student killed in a murder-suicide last week will be remembered at vigils in Chico and Redding, and the Thursday Night Market is back in Chico again this evening.

A shooting that left two people dead in Chico on Thursday is still under investigation. But officials say the individuals had previously been in a relationship, raising concerns about intimate partner violence.
